Joani
Feminine · “Hebrew Yochanan”
Joan is what happens when a name loses its ending. Latin Johanna gave French Jehanne, then Jeanne, then English Joan by about 1300, each step shorter than the last. Joani puts an ending back on the shortest form, which means the name has now gone down and up the same staircase.

The story of Joani
Joan was one of the two or three commonest women's names in medieval England, so common that it worked as a generic word for a countrywoman, the female equivalent of Jack. It then collapsed almost completely: by 1700 it had been displaced by Jane, its own French cousin, which entered English later and sounded newer. The Victorian revival brought it back, it reached its American height in the 1930s, and it fell again after 1960. Joani belongs to the very end of that arc. When a name is fading, its diminutives briefly outperform it, because parents who like the sound but not the plainness reach for a form that seems less inherited. The same thing happened to Nancy at the end of Ann, to Sally at the end of Sarah, and to Josie at the end of Josephine.
Meaning
Hebrew Yochanan, Yah is gracious
Joan is the English feminine of John, from Latin Johannes and Hebrew Yochanan, Yah is gracious. The route runs Johanna to Jehanne to Jeanne to Joan, shortening at every step, which is why Joan is a single syllable while its Latin ancestor has three. Joani, Joanie and Joni are the -ie diminutive applied to that stump. The peak is 1960, the last decade in which Joan itself was still a common name.

The Wana test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Joani's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Wana climbed just as high around 1927, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Wana's path sketches the road Joani is walking now.
Joani sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
