Jeziel is one of the deep cuts of the Hebrew Bible: a single mention in a list of Benjamite warriors who joined David at Ziklag, ambidextrous with bow and sling. It has almost no English-language history and a rising Spanish-language one, and its American peak is only a few years old.

When was the name Jeziel most popular?

Jeziel peaked in 2022, reaching #2269 nationally. Today it ranks #5208, 2,939 places below that high. See the whole 2022 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Jeziel

The Chronicler lists the men who came to David at Ziklag while he was still an outlaw, and names Jeziel among the Benjamite archers who could shoot and sling with either hand. He is never mentioned again. Names taken from these lists have had a long second life in Spanish-speaking Christianity, particularly in evangelical and Pentecostal communities that read the historical books closely, and Jeziel belongs to that harvest along with Jaziel, Yaziel and Uziel. Its American record is almost entirely twenty-first-century and Hispanic, and its peak in 2022 makes it one of the newest names in the whole ranked list.

God sprinkles, or assembly of God

The Hebrew of 1 Chronicles 12:3 is uncertain and the manuscripts differ, giving Yeziʾel and Yezawʾel. Proposed readings include God sprinkles, from nāzāh, and assembly of God. The -ʾel ending is unambiguously the divine element; the first part is not recoverable with confidence. Most reference works say so plainly.

Jeziel sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2022, with 63 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jeziel went to 18 boys in 2025, but Jesiel is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 25, which makes it the 903rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,305 places above the chart.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Jeziel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Pearce climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is genuinely biblical and almost nobody else has it.
  • The -el ending places it clearly in the family of Gabriel, Uriel and Ezekiel.
  • It is short and follows Spanish spelling exactly.
What to consider
  • The meaning cannot be established, and honest sources will not give one.
  • Spanish and English say the j completely differently.
  • Jeziel, Jaziel, Yaziel and Yeziel are close enough to be confused constantly.
