Jessia is Jessica with the c removed, and consonant deletion is a rarer respelling move than letter substitution. Taking a letter out shortens the name on the page without shortening it in the mouth by much — Jessica has three syllables and Jessia has two or three depending on the speaker, which makes it genuinely unstable.

Where it comes from

Our story of Jessia

Respelling usually adds letters. Substituting y for i, doubling a consonant, appending an h — these all leave the name the same length or longer, which is why the phrase spelling inflation gets used. Deletion is the opposite move and it is much less common, because removing a letter makes a name look incomplete rather than distinctive. Jessia is a clean example of the risk: the c in Jessica is not silent, it is the consonant that separates the second and third syllables, and taking it out leaves a name that different readers will syllabify differently. Jessia peaked in 1983 when Jessica was the most-used girls' name in the United States, which is exactly when the pressure to have a different version of it was highest.

Probably Hebrew "God beholds", by way of Shakespeare

Jessica first appears in The Merchant of Venice in 1596, and Shakespeare is generally thought to have adapted it from Iscah, a name in Genesis rendered Jesca in some English Bibles, from a root meaning to look out or behold. That derivation is likely but not certain. Jessia has no separate etymology; it inherits whatever Jessica has.

Jessia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2019, with 42 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
