Jesselyn

Jesse survives in English largely because of a picture. The Tree of Jesse, a diagram of Christ's ancestry growing out of a sleeping man's side, filled cathedral windows across medieval Europe and kept a minor Old Testament father in front of people who could not read.

The story of Jesselyn
Isaiah's line about a shoot coming forth from the stump of Jesse was read as a prophecy of Christ's descent, and from the eleventh century onward it was drawn: a recumbent Jesse with a vine rising from him, kings and prophets on the branches, Mary and Christ at the top. The Tree of Jesse appears in stained glass at Chartres and Saint-Denis, in psalters, on carved screens and in embroidery, and it is the reason an otherwise unremarkable name in the book of Samuel stayed in circulation. Very few names owe their survival to an image rather than to a story or a saint. Jesse then took the ordinary English path from Puritan use to nineteenth-century frontier name to modern unisex one, and Jesselyn belongs to the last stretch, when the base name was familiar enough to be extended.

The Gwenna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jesselyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gwenna climbed just as high around 1965, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gwenna's path sketches the road Jesselyn is walking now.
Jesselyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Jess is an immediate, widely used short form.
- The base name has been in English use for four hundred years.
- It is much rarer than Jessica while sharing its opening.
- It will be heard as Jocelyn or Jessalyn constantly.
- The -lyn ending dates it to the late twentieth century.
- Jesse's own meaning is genuinely unknown, so no reading can be promised.
