The story of Jeremiah
Joy to the World was written as a throwaway, its first line a placeholder its own composer disliked, and it became the biggest American single of 1971 and one of the most played records of the decade. A generation heard the name Jeremiah for the first time in that context rather than in church. In the same window Jeremiah Johnson, a mountain-man film released in 1972, put the name in front of the same audience again, this time as a solitary frontier figure. The prophet himself is one of the most argued-with figures in the Hebrew Bible, a man who spends his book objecting to his own commission, and the English word jeremiad, a prolonged lament, is taken from his writing. The small female use of the 1970s sits on the sound rather than on any of that.

Hebrew Yirmeyahu, Yah exalts
From Hebrew Yirmeyahu, generally read as Yah exalts or Yah establishes, though the first element is not fully settled. Jeremiah is the prophet of the book that bears his name and is traditionally credited with Lamentations. This is an overwhelmingly male name; its small female peak is 1977.

The Orianna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jeremiah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Orianna climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Orianna's path sketches the road Jeremiah is walking now.
Jeremiah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
