Where it comes from

The story of Orianna

Amadís de Gaula is the chivalric romance that Cervantes spends the first hundred pages of Don Quixote making fun of, and it was enormously popular across Europe in the sixteenth century. Oriana is its heroine. Elizabethan poets took the name up for their own queen — a collection of madrigals published in 1601 addresses her as Oriana throughout — and it entered English use from there. Orianna with the doubled n is a later spelling.

gold — most likely

Oriana is generally connected to Latin aurum and Old French or, 'gold', which would make it a golden one; that is the standard reading and it is a proposal rather than a documented derivation. A connection to Latin oriri, 'to rise', giving a sense of dawn, has also been offered. The name appears first in a work of fiction, which is why the etymology is uncertain — it may have been made rather than descended.

Orianna sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2013, with 68 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Orianna went to 53 girls in 2025, but Oriana is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 166, which makes it the 794th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,273 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 9,682 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 30,326 for Orianna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ori, Anna and Ria are three ready short forms, all of them established names.
  • A documented literary origin with a genuinely well-recorded history of use.
  • Four syllables give it real formality, with everyday forms immediately available.
What to consider
  • Its meaning is a proposal rather than a record, since the name was probably coined.
  • Oriana, Orianna and Orianne all circulate and none is dominant.
  • Four syllables is long for daily use and the name will usually be shortened.
