Our story of Jenaya
Jennifer's American career is one of the sharpest in the record: almost unknown before 1940, in the top ten by 1966, the single most common girls' name in the country every year from 1970 to 1984, and then a long decline. The name came out of Cornwall, where Jenifer had survived as a local form, and reached general English use partly through a Shaw play and partly through mid-century film. Almost nobody choosing it knew it was Guinevere. Once it was that large it became a stem, and Jen- was available for extension exactly as Kayla and Michaela later were: Jenaya, Jenessa, Jenika, Jennika. Jenaya peaks in 1973, at the height of the parent name's run, which is the moment the stem becomes productive.
Meaning
Welsh "white phantom" or "fair spirit"
Gwenhwyfar is generally read as gwen, white, fair or blessed, plus a second element meaning a phantom or fairy. Cornish preserved it as Jenifer, which English took as Jennifer in the twentieth century. Jenaya is a modern American formation on Jen- with the -aya ending and has no documented meaning of its own; the connection to Guinevere runs only through the first syllable.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jenaya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Pedro climbed just as high around 1932, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Pedro's path sketches the road Jenaya is walking now.
