Jd
Masculine
Jd is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,419 boys against 30 girls since 1880.
In much of the American South, initials were the name. Not an abbreviation of anything, not a nickname: a boy was registered as J.D. and the letters stood for nothing at all, which caused genuine trouble when the army required a full name and had to invent the formula J only D only.

Our story of Jd
A name made of initials is a genuinely different object from a name that is abbreviated to initials, and American record-keeping struggled with the distinction for most of the twentieth century. Institutions that required a first and middle name could not accept two letters, and the United States military settled the problem by recording such men as, for example, J only D only, a formula that appears in service records and on gravestones. The practice belongs largely to the South and to rural communities, and it is bound up with families in which the same three or four first names recurred so often that initials were the only practical way to tell people apart. Jd's best year in American records is 1923, and the habit has faded steadily since.

Not established
Initial names generally stand for nothing. Where they do stand for something, the source is whatever the family intended, most often two grandfathers' names, and there is no way to recover it from the letters. The practice is documented across the American South and in rural communities elsewhere, and it produced J.D., J.W., R.C., B.J. and many others as legal names in their own right.
