Jb

The story of Jb
The practice was concentrated in the rural South and was widespread enough that Army records from both world wars had to deal with it systematically. A recruit whose legal name was two letters could not be processed by forms that required a given name, and the services developed conventions to cope — assigning the letters as the full name, recording (only) after them, or noting NMI, no middle initial. That bureaucratic pressure, together with the spread of Social Security registration from 1936 and the paperwork of schooling and banking, made an initials-only name progressively harder to hold, and the practice faded through the mid-century. The peak in the American given-name figures is 1920; by 1960 the row is nearly empty.
Meaning
Initials registered as a name
There is no etymology, because there is no word. The two letters usually stood for nothing at all: a child given the initials of a grandfather without the names behind them, or initials chosen for their sound. Where a name did lie behind them it varies entirely by family. The convention is normally written J. B. with periods; database entry strips them, which is why the row appears as Jb.
