Jayde
Feminine · “jade”

Jayde is the gemstone Jade written the long way, and the stone behind it has been prized from Mesoamerica to China for thousands of years. It is one syllable, ends in a clean hard d, and says itself the moment anyone sees it. As a given name it belongs to the modern era rather than the deep past, which is unusual company for a word this old.

The story of Jayde
The word traveled before the name did. Spanish speakers in the Americas called the green stone piedra de ijada, from Latin ilia, the flanks; French borrowed it, misdivided l'ejade into le jade, and English took the shorter French form. Jade began appearing as a given name in English-speaking countries in the twentieth century, part of the wider taste for gemstone names alongside Ruby, Pearl and Opal. Jayde is a respelling of that name, arriving in American records in the later twentieth century and rising alongside the broad fashion for -ay- spellings.
Meaning
jade, the green stone
The stone's own name comes from Spanish piedra de ijada, 'stone of the flank' — Spanish colonists in the Americas recorded it as a remedy for pain in the side and kidneys.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jayde went to 146 girls in 2025, but Jaide and Jaydee are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 188, which makes it the 772nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 695 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 8,549 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 11,009 for Jayde itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Adelle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jayde's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Adelle climbed just as high around 1906, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Adelle's path sketches the road Jayde is walking now.
Jayde sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Pronunciation is never in doubt — it is an English word everyone already knows, spoken the same way in every accent.
- One syllable, easy to call across a room and easy to pair with a longer middle or family name.
- Jade travels intact through French, Spanish, Portuguese and German, with Giada as the Italian counterpart.
- Gives a natural short form in Jay, which works from kindergarten through a working life.
- The default spelling is Jade. Expect a lifetime of gentle correction — on forms, in email addresses, at the coffee counter — because most people will write the four-letter version first.
- The -ayd- spelling sits with the Jayden, Jaylen, Kayden group, which ties it fairly clearly to a particular stretch of recent decades. Plain Jade reads as more era-neutral.
- It is a word as well as a name, so it carries the stone, the color and the phrase 'jaded' somewhere in the background — near-homophones tend to surface at some point in a schoolyard.
- It is stepping back from its high point rather than climbing, so a child with this name is unlikely to share it with anyone in her year — a real advantage for some families, and worth knowing either way.
