Where it comes from

The story of Adelle

Frankish and German noblewomen carried names built on adal for centuries, and the short form Adela was in use by the early Middle Ages. French took it as Adele, and the nineteenth century made it fashionable across Europe and America together, along with its longer relatives Adeline and Adelaide. The doubled l and silent e of Adelle are an English and American refinement of the French spelling, and they belong to the turn of the twentieth century, when the name was widely given.

Meaning

noble

Germanic adal, noble or of good family, which appears at the head of a long list of names: Adelheid, Adelaide, Adela, Adeline, Alice and Albert among them. Adele is the short form standing alone.

Adelle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2011, with 179 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Adelle went to 28 girls in 2025, but Adele is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 390, which makes it the 599th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,159 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 4,121 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 57,402 for Adelle itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is a single word and one of the most productive in European naming.
  • It offers several short forms of very different ages, from Della to Addie.
  • It works in French, German, Italian and English households without changing shape.
What to consider
  • Adele is the standard spelling in every language the name belongs to, so this one will be corrected.
  • Adele, Adelle, Adell and Adela are all in circulation.
  • The name is strongly associated with one contemporary singer, which is a large shadow for a short name.
