Louella
Feminine · “Lou' plus the ending -ella”
Louella is one of those nineteenth-century American inventions built by ear: the homely Lou set against the singing -ella ending that Ella, Bella and Stella all share. It has three unhurried syllables and lands on the middle one, so it says itself easily. It never disappeared from the American record — it simply went quiet for a few generations, and has been turning up again.

The story of Louella
Louella belongs to a wave of names assembled in English-speaking America in the eighteen hundreds, when parents freely combined a short familiar name with a melodic ending: Luella, Louella, Lunella, Ellanora and dozens more like them. The Luella spelling came first and stayed more common, with Louella running alongside it as the version that keeps the Lou visible. It was already well established by the time the Hollywood columnist Louella Parsons, born in Illinois in 1881, made the spelling recognizable to newspaper readers across the country for most of the twentieth century. The name has stayed strongest in the Midwest and in California, roughly the same ground it held when it was new.

'Lou' plus the ending -ella; through Louise and Louis back to Germanic elements for 'famous' and 'warrior'
Two readings compete. The usual one treats Louella as Lou — the short form of Louise and Louis, from Germanic hlud 'famous' and wig 'warrior' — dressed with the fashionable Latinate ending -ella. The other treats it as an elaboration of Ella, a name with its own separate Germanic root. Because Louella was coined by English speakers arranging familiar sounds rather than translated from an older word, neither reading can be proved, and both were probably in the minds of the families who first used it.

The trade-off
- Comes with short forms that need no explaining: Lou and Ella are both established given names on their own.
- Every part of it is already familiar in English — Lou, Ella, and the -ella ending shared with Isabella and Stella.
- In continuous use in the United States since the nineteenth century, so it is old rather than new-minted.
- Sits inside a large family of related names — Louise, Luisa, Luise — if relatives elsewhere prefer a local form.
- Luella is the more common spelling, so expect to spell Louella out fairly often, and to see it come back with the O missing.
- It is still strongly represented among older generations, which for some ears makes it a great-grandmother's name rather than a child's. That reading is fading as the name returns, but it is out there.
- A child named Louella will almost certainly be the only one in her school — freeing in most ways, though it does mean the name gets noticed and remarked on.
- Because Ella and the -ella ending are everywhere at the moment, Louella can be misheard as one of the more common names in that group on first introduction.
