Zia
Feminine · “Light”
Zia is given to both — 3,228 girls and 322 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Three letters, two clear syllables, an open vowel at each end — Zia is about as easy to say aloud as a name gets. It has been carried for centuries across the Arabic-speaking world and into Persian, Turkish and Urdu, where ضياء means light or radiance. It also turns up, by a completely separate road, in the high desert of New Mexico: Zia Pueblo, whose sun symbol sits at the center of that state's flag.
How old is the name Zia?
Zia first appears in US birth records in 1976 — 49 years ago. The typical Zia is a kid of about 9 — this name's wave is very recent. About 3,200 people named Zia are estimated to be alive in the US today.
When was the name Zia most popular?

The story of Zia
Arabic ḍiyāʾ, 'light', spread with Islam east into Persian, Turkish, Urdu and Bengali, most often inside longer compounds — Ziauddin, 'light of the faith' — and shortened in daily speech to Zia. In all of those languages it is a man's name, and it remains in steady use across Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran and Turkey, where the Turkish spelling is Ziya. In Italian, unrelated to any of this, zia is simply the everyday word for aunt. In the American Southwest the same three letters belong to Zia Pueblo, a Keresan-speaking community in New Mexico whose sun emblem became the state's flag in the 1920s. US records show Zia as a girl's name, and its use here is recent rather than inherited.

Light, radiance — from Arabic ḍiyāʾ
The oldest and best-documented reading is Arabic ḍiyāʾ, 'light, brilliance', the light a lamp or the sun gives off, usually transliterated Zia or Ziya. But the same spelling is the ordinary Italian word for 'aunt', and it is also the name of Zia Pueblo in New Mexico and of the sun symbol associated with it. American parents have arrived at this spelling from more than one of those directions, and the record does not sort them out.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Zia went to 146 girls in 2025, but Zya, Ziya and Ziyah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 8 spellings went to 503, which makes it the 516th most-given girls’ name of the year — 951 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,195 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 11,009 for Zia itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Magaly test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Magaly climbed just as high around 1994, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Magaly's path sketches the road Zia is walking now.
Zia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Three letters, spelled the way it sounds — most Americans get it right on the first try, by eye and by ear.
- Already short, so it needs no nickname, and it carries one anyway in Zi or Zee.
- A documented record of centuries in Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Urdu, which makes it readable to a very large part of the world.
- Uncommon enough in US classrooms that a child is unlikely to share it, without being a spelling nobody has seen.
- In Arabic, Urdu, Turkish and Bengali the name belongs to men, often as a short form of Ziauddin. Relatives or friends from those language communities may read it as a boy's name first — worth knowing, not worth worrying about.
- To Italian speakers, zia is the plain word for aunt. It is a mild double meaning rather than an embarrassing one, but it will be noticed in Italian-speaking families.
- Zia Pueblo and the Zia sun symbol are living cultural property in New Mexico, and the Pueblo has objected to commercial use of the emblem. If that connection is part of why you like the name, it is worth understanding whose it is.
- It sits close to Mia, Tia and Zoe in sound, so expect the occasional mishearing over the phone.
