Where it comes from

The story of Magaly

Frederic Mistral's Mireio, published in 1859, is a long poem in Provençal that won its author a Nobel prize and helped keep the language alive; the song of Magali inside it became a standard, sung at weddings and festivals across the south of France. The name spread from there into French and then into Spanish-speaking countries, where Magaly and Magali are both used. It reaches United States records mostly from Mexican and Caribbean families rather than from France.

Meaning

pearl

Margarita is Greek margarites, 'pearl', which Greek took from an eastern language — Persian or Sanskrit — along with the pearls themselves. Occitan Magali is a form of it, and the reading travels down unchanged. The -y ending is a French and Spanish spelling of the same name.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Magaly went to 53 girls in 2025, but Magali is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 84, which makes it the 876th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,191 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 19,134 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 30,326 for Magaly itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented origin with an unusually specific and charming literary history.
  • Maga and Maggie are both usable short forms in different languages.
  • Three syllables that read correctly in Spanish and French at first sight.
What to consider
  • The stress falls at the end in French and Spanish and at the front in English.
  • Magaly, Magali, Magalie and Magally all circulate and none is standard.
  • Outside Spanish and French communities it will be spelled out every time.
