The story of Jaydee
Initial-only names are well attested in southern records from the nineteenth century onward, and they were not abbreviations — the initials were the name. The federal government did not cope with this. Recruits were enrolled as J Only D Only, or given invented expansions, and pension and Social Security files still carry the confusion. Families meanwhile did the obvious thing and started writing the letters out as they were said, which is where Jaydee, Jaycee, Ellie, Emmy, Deedee and Bebe come from. Written that way, the name stops being an abbreviation of anything and becomes a word, which is exactly what the families intended in the first place.
