The coincidence problem is the central difficulty in short-name etymology, and it is a matter of arithmetic rather than scholarship. A four-letter name using common consonants and the commonest vowel will be generated independently by any language that has those sounds, and the world's languages have generated them many times. There is no way to reason from the letters back to a source. Longer names do not have this problem: Hermelinda or Vasiliki could only have come from one place each, because the probability of two languages assembling nine letters identically by chance is negligible. This is why reference books are confident about long names and vague about short ones, and why a short name in an American record usually needs family knowledge rather than a dictionary to settle. Jara is a clean example, with at least three real candidates and no way to choose.

Several unconnected sources produce this spelling. Spanish jara is the rockrose or cistus shrub, and also an arrow shaft, a word borrowed from Andalusi Arabic. Czech and Slovak Jara is a familiar form of Jaroslava, from a Slavic root meaning fierce or bright. Serbian and Croatian jara means heat or the spring warmth. The Spanish reading is the likeliest for an American bearer given the 1972 peak, but the record cannot distinguish them.
