Our story of Jaquez
The -ez ending in Spanish is a real morpheme with a real job: González is son of Gonzalo, Rodríguez son of Rodrigo, Martínez son of Martín. It is one of the most productive patronymic systems in Europe. What American naming did with it in the 1980s and 1990s is take the sound and drop the function — Jaquez, Marquez, Antwez and Daquez appear as given names with no patronymic sense at all, formed on an ending rather than on a father's name. That is a completely ordinary thing to happen to a borrowed morpheme, and it has happened before in English with -son, -ette and -ista. Jaquez's peak in 2002 sits at the tail of the prefix era.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source establishes an etymology. The Ja- prefix is a productive American naming element with no documented meaning. The -quez ending is drawn from Spanish surnames where -ez is a genuine patronymic suffix meaning son of — Marquez is son of Marcos — but that function does not transfer, and Jaquez is not a Spanish surname. French Jacques is separately available and is not documented as the source.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaquez went to 16 boys in 2025, but Jacques, Jacquees and Jacquez are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 120, which makes it the 808th most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,800 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 14,234 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 106,755 for Jaquez itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Therman test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jaquez's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Therman climbed just as high around 1919, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Therman's path sketches the road Jaquez is walking now.
Jaquez sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Quez works as a short form and is used on its own.
- Six letters and two syllables keep it compact.
- The z ending is uncommon and makes it distinctive.
- The -ez ending suggests a Spanish patronymic the name does not have.
- There is no meaning behind it to give a child.
- Jaquez, Jaquese and Jacquez are three spellings of nearly one sound.
