The first syllable of this name is a god. The Thur- in Thurman and Thurston and Thorburn is Thor, and the names are compounds built on him — which makes them among the very few Norse religious names to have survived a thousand years of Christianity without anybody objecting.

Where it comes from

The story of Therman

The god is also in the calendar, along with three of his colleagues. Four English weekdays carry Germanic gods — Tuesday belongs to a war god, Wednesday to Woden, Thursday to Thor and Friday to Frigg — and Saturday alone kept the Roman one it was translated from. Sunday and Monday are the sun and the moon, as they are in most of Europe. So the English week is a compromise document: a Roman scheme with the planetary gods swapped out for their nearest Germanic equivalents, except for Saturn, whom nobody could match.

Meaning

Thor's man, or Thor's protection

The first element is the god's name and the second is the ordinary word for a man or a servant. Names of this kind were common in Scandinavia and traveled to England with Norse settlement.

Therman sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1919, with 49 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Therman sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a genuinely ancient religious element rather than a vague one.
  • The spelling gives no trouble once the stress is placed.
  • It is genuinely rare with no competing modern associations.
What to consider
  • Thurman is the commoner spelling and this one gets corrected.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
  • The first syllable collides with a scientific prefix in writing.
