Where it comes from

The story of Janett

Janet was one of the two or three commonest women's names in Scotland for centuries, ordinary enough to be the default name in ballads and in court records. The best of the ballads is Tam Lin, in which Janet goes to a wood she has been told to avoid, meets a man held by the fairy queen, and rescues him by holding on to him while he is turned into a snake, a bear, a lion and a bar of red-hot iron. She does not let go. It is one of very few ballads in which a woman does the rescuing and the man is the prize. Jenny is the pet form of that name, and Jennifer only borrowed it much later.

Meaning

God is gracious

Janet is the Scots diminutive of Jane, which is the feminine of John, from Hebrew Yochanan: God is gracious. The -et ending is the French diminutive that Scots borrowed and used freely. Janett is an American spelling with the final e dropped and the t doubled.

Janett sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1952, with 63 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Janett went to 7 girls in 2025, but Janet is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 68, which makes it the 892nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,040 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 23,636 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Janett itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Janett's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Coralee climbed just as high around 1909, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Hebrew meaning shared with the largest name family in Europe.
  • Three short forms of very different registers, all of them full names elsewhere.
  • Two syllables with nothing in the spelling to explain.
What to consider
  • Janet is the standard spelling and the doubled t will be dropped by almost everyone.
  • The stress is genuinely unsettled between the two syllables.
  • It is strongly represented among older generations and places the name in the last century.
