Hedy
Feminine · “battle”
The actress who made this name famous in the 1940s also co-invented a way of stopping radio signals being jammed, by hopping them across frequencies in a pattern only the sender and receiver knew. She patented it in 1942. The idea sat unused for decades and is an ancestor of the technology in every phone.

The story of Hedy
Germanic name-building worked by combining two elements from a fixed and rather narrow stock — battle, war, army, wolf, bear, ruler, bright, noble — and the combinations were often redundant or nonsensical. Hadewig is battle-war. Hildegard is battle-enclosure. Wilhelm is will-helmet. A family passed elements down rather than whole names, so a mother's element and a father's could be joined regardless of the result. Hedwig became a saint's name in Poland and Germany, where it is still ordinary, and Hedy is its everyday short form. In America it arrived with one Viennese woman in the late 1930s and rose immediately.
Meaning
battle, twice over
A short form of Hedwig, Old High German Hadewig: hadu, battle or combat, with wig, war. Both elements mean fighting, which is not unusual — Germanic names were assembled from prestigious words and did not have to make a sensible phrase together.

The Palma test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Hedy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Palma climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Palma's path sketches the road Hedy is walking now.
Hedy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
