The -ya ending arrived in American girls' naming from several directions at once, and by the nineteen-nineties it had stopped belonging to any of them. It closes Amya and Kamya and Nyla and Jaya, and it works because it lands high and stays open, so the name carries when it is called. Jamya takes the Ja- opening that was already on every class list and adds it. Names made this way are often dismissed as arbitrary, which misses the point: the choices in them are all choices of sound, made by people with a very sure ear for what their language does.
