Where it comes from

Our story of Jamia

Ours, offered as ours. The Arabic root j-m-ʿ means to gather, and it gives the word for the mosque where a whole community assembles and, by a natural extension, for a university — a place where knowledge is collected. Al-Azhar in Cairo has been both since the tenth century. Jamia in American records almost certainly comes from the Ja- family rather than from Arabic, and the neighbor is worth naming without being claimed.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source is established for the given name. Arabic jami and jamia are documented, from a root meaning to gather; a jami is the mosque where the community assembles for Friday prayer and a jamia is a university. Whether the name draws on either is not recorded.

Jamia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2003, with 221 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jamia went to 39 girls in 2025, but Jamiyah, Jamya and Jamiah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 167, which makes it the 793rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,987 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 9,624 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 41,212 for Jamia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
