Our story of Jalyn
For most of its history the Latin alphabet had twenty-three letters, and I did double duty as a vowel and a consonant. Printers began distinguishing the shapes in the sixteenth century, the practice settled in the seventeenth, and English gained J, with U and W arriving on similar terms. The consequence for names is easy to miss: every J name in English is a respelling of something that used to start with an I, and the letter itself is younger than Shakespeare's birth. What happened next is remarkable. J became the workhorse of American naming, first through the biblical names, John, James, Joseph, Jacob, Joshua, then through the coinages that used it as a default opening, Jayden, Jalen, Jamar, Jalyn. The newest letter in the alphabet now opens more American names than any other.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
