The story of Jenelle
Jennifer was a Cornish name almost unknown outside Cornwall until the twentieth century; George Bernard Shaw used it in a 1906 play and it spread from there, reaching the top of the American list in 1970 and holding first place until 1984. A name that dominant generates satellites, and the Jen- front detached and combined freely: Jenelle, Jenae, Jenessa, Jenika, Jenavieve. The -elle ending had been made available by Michelle and Danielle, both of which were top-twenty American names in the same period. Jenelle sits at the intersection and peaks in 1981, at the exact height of both.
Meaningscholars disagree
'white shadow' or 'fair one', in the Jennifer reading
Jennifer is the Cornish form of Guinevere, from Welsh Gwenhwyfar — gwen, 'white, fair, blessed', and hwyfar, whose meaning is disputed, often given as 'smooth' or 'phantom', producing 'white phantom' or 'fair one'. That is the likeliest ancestry for the Jen- front. The -elle ending is French and carries no meaning. So the front has a contested etymology and the ending has none.

The Freeda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jenelle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Freeda climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Freeda's path sketches the road Jenelle is walking now.
