The story of Jalal
The honorific Jalal al-Din, majesty of the faith, was given to rulers, judges and scholars from the eleventh century onward, and like several other such titles it eventually detached and became an ordinary given name. It is used across the Arab world, Iran, Turkey, Central Asia and South Asia, and among Muslim families elsewhere. The poet born in Balkh who wrote in Persian and is buried in Konya carried it, which is why the name is known far outside the Muslim world.
Meaning
majesty, glory, grandeur
Arabic jalal, from a root meaning to be great or exalted. In Islamic theology jalal, majesty, is paired with jamal, beauty, as two aspects of the divine, which is why the two names sound alike and mean different things.

The Abdon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jalal's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Abdon climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Abdon's path sketches the road Jalal is walking now.
Jalal sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a single large word and is documented in theology as well as in dictionaries.
- Five letters and two syllables make it easy to write and to say in any language.
- It is recognized from Morocco to Indonesia.
- Jalal and Jamal are one letter apart and mean quite different things, so they get swapped.
- English speakers may stress the first syllable, which changes the rhythm.
- Majesty is a large word to hand a small person, which some families weigh carefully.
