Kyrie eleison is the one Greek phrase that survived in the Latin Mass. Kyrios is a lord and kyria a lady, and the vocative kyrie — Lord, have mercy — stayed in Greek when everything around it was translated, because the words were too old and too fixed to move.

Where it comes from

Our story of Jakyra

The Roman rite was celebrated in Greek before it was celebrated in Latin, and when it changed languages in the third and fourth centuries one fragment did not change: the Kyrie. It stayed Greek through fifteen centuries of Latin liturgy, was kept when the Mass moved into the vernacular after 1965, and is still sung in Greek in churches whose congregations have never heard another word of it. Fixed formulas do this. The Hebrew amen, alleluia and hosanna survive untranslated in Christian worship for the same reason, and so does the Aramaic maranatha. A phrase repeated often enough stops being a sentence and becomes an object. Kyrios, meanwhile, is an ordinary Greek word — the modern Greek for Mr — and its feminine kyria supplied a name. Jakyra peaks in 2005.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No inherited meaning as a compound. Ja- is a created American prefix; -kyra is drawn from Kyra, which is Greek kyria, a lady, the feminine of kyrios, a lord. Kyra is also used as a form of Cyrus, a Persian name, and as a Russian name. Jakyra as a whole has no documented reading.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jakyra went to 13 girls in 2025, but Jakira is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 20, which makes it the 940th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,945 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 80,363 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Jakyra itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kyra is an immediate short form and a settled name of its own.
  • It is soft, flowing and easy to say in English.
  • The K spelling makes it visually distinctive.
What to consider
  • The stressed vowel is pronounced two different ways.
  • Jakira and Jakyrah compete for the same sound.
  • There is no meaning to give for the compound.
