Jaice
Masculine · “healer”

The story of Jaice
Jason led the Argonauts to Colchis for the Golden Fleece, and the story was among the best known in the ancient world. The name entered English use late — it appears in the New Testament as a minor figure in Acts, which gave it a small biblical foothold — and became genuinely popular only in the 1970s, when it reached the American top ten. The short form Jace followed, and by the 2000s it was a name in its own right rather than a clipping. Then came the respellings: Jayce, Jaice, Jayse, Jaece. Jaice is the one that keeps the c and adds the i, which produces a spelling no other English word uses.

healer
Greek Iason is generally derived from iasthai, 'to heal' — appropriate for a hero raised by the centaur Chiron, who taught medicine. That derivation is standard but not certain, and some scholars treat the name as pre-Greek. The connection to Jace is the second uncertainty: Jace is used as a short form of Jason, of Jacob and of the initials J.C., and different families arrived at it by different routes. Jaice inherits both questions.

JAYSS
One syllable, rhyming with face. The i is doing the same work as a y would and adds no sound. Readers meeting it cold occasionally try JYSS or JAY-iss, which is the one hazard of the unusual spelling.

About 1 boy in 742 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 113,872 for Jaice itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Theordore test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jaice's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Theordore climbed just as high around 1920, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Theordore's path sketches the road Jaice is walking now.
Jaice sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable and five letters, quick to say and quick to write.
- Jay and Ace are both usable short forms with different characters.
- Jason is available as a longer, fully traditional version.
- Jace and Jayce are both far more common and hers will be written as one of them.
- The ai spelling before a c is unusual in English and gets misread.
- One-syllable names leave a bearer with no nickname in reserve.
