The story of Jaeda
When Spanish soldiers reached Mesoamerica they found a green stone being used in the way Europeans used gold, and they recorded the local claim that it was good for the kidneys and the side. The name they gave it, piedra de ijada, passed into French as l'ejade and then, by a misreading of the article, as le jade, which is where English got the word. Mineralogists later found that two different stones had been sold under the name and split them: jadeite and nephrite, the second named from the Greek for kidney, so both the popular and the scientific names preserve a piece of sixteenth-century medicine. The stone's real cultural weight was elsewhere: in China it outranked gold for three thousand years, and in Mesoamerica it was buried with rulers.
