Jae
Feminine
Jae is given to both — 1,280 girls and 1,700 boys since 1880. See Jae as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Three letters, two completely separate lives. In mid-century America Jae was a decorated spelling of Jay, an initial made into a name. In Korean it is one of the most-used syllables in the language's naming stock, the element in Jae-won, Jae-hyun and Jae-min, and it is not a name on its own there at all.

The story of Jae
Jae's American peak is 1952, which is worth pinning down because it precedes almost all Korean migration to the United States; the mid-century Jae is the English one, part of a small fashion for turning initials and single syllables into full names that also produced Kae, Rae, Fae and Bae. Korean names conventionally use two syllables, each written with a Chinese character, and jae is among the most common first elements; when Korean-American families romanise them the hyphen is often dropped and the syllables separated, which puts Jae into United States records again from the 1970s onward as a written given name. The two streams are unrelated and share only their spelling.

Not established
The American Jae is a written variant of Jay, itself usually from the initial J, from the bird, or from a clip of James or Jason, and it carries no meaning. The Korean element is written with several different Chinese characters, each with its own sense, including talent, wealth, again and existing; which one applies depends entirely on the characters a family chose, and the romanised spelling cannot tell you. Any single meaning offered for these three letters is guessing at one of two systems.

The Fermina test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jae's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Fermina climbed just as high around 1924, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Fermina's path sketches the road Jae is walking now.
Jae sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable and three letters, which is about as portable as a name gets.
- Fully unisex, and used as such in both the American and the Korean tradition.
- Works as a standalone name or as a short form of a longer one.
- Jay is the standard English spelling and will be written for you almost always.
- In Korean it is a name element rather than a whole name, which Korean speakers may note.
- It is short enough that people will assume it is an abbreviation of something.
