Jadzia
Feminine · “Germanic hadu and wig”
Jadwiga was crowned King of Poland in 1384, not Queen. She was ten years old and the title was deliberate: rex carried the sovereign power and regina did not, so the nobles who wanted her on the throne used the masculine word. She ruled for fifteen years and was canonized six hundred years later.

The story of Jadzia
Jadwiga of Anjou came to the Polish throne after a succession crisis, and the formula used at her coronation, Hedvig Rex Poloniae, was chosen so that she would hold the full royal authority rather than the consort's position. She was betrothed as a child to an Austrian duke, the engagement was broken, and she was married instead to Jogaila, Grand Duke of Lithuania, who converted to Christianity as part of the arrangement. That marriage created the union of Poland and Lithuania, which became one of the largest states in Europe and lasted four hundred years. She refounded the university at Krakow, which is named for her, and died at twenty-five after childbirth. She was canonized in 1997. The name she carried is made of two words for fighting, which is more usual in Germanic women's names than most people expect.
Meaning
Germanic hadu and wig, battle and war
Jadzia is the Polish diminutive of Jadwiga, which is the Polish form of the Germanic Hedwig, from hadu, battle, and wig, war or combat. Both elements mean fighting. The name reached Poland through the Silesian and German nobility. Jadzia is separately the name of a character in a science fiction series that ran from 1993 to 1999, which is the likeliest source of the small American peak in 1995.

The Maurica test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jadzia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maurica climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maurica's path sketches the road Jadzia is walking now.
Jadzia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
