Where it comes from

Our story of Jadelyn

Ours, offered as ours. The stone at the front of this name has one of the odder etymologies in English. Spanish colonists in Mexico found a green stone the Aztecs valued and believed it relieved pain in the side, so they named it for the ailment rather than the color. French shortened the phrase to le jade and English took it from there. Jadelyn adds the ending that Carolyn and Evelyn left lying around. Medical Spanish at the front, American suffix at the back.

Meaningscholars disagree

jade, the stone

Jade is documented: Spanish colonists called the green stone piedra de la ijada, stone of the flank, because it was thought to cure kidney pain, and French and English shortened the phrase. Whether Jadelyn was built on it deliberately or assembled from Jade and the -lyn suffix is not recorded.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jadelyn went to 44 girls in 2025, but Jadelynn and Jadelin are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 89, which makes it the 871st most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,588 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 18,059 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 36,529 for Jadelyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths

  • Read correctly on sight by every English speaker.
  • The stone behind it is real and has a good story.
