Gweneth
Feminine · “Welsh "blessed”
Gweneth is Welsh, and the first element is one of the most productive in the language. Gwyn means white, fair, or blessed, and it is everywhere in Welsh naming — Gwyneth, Gwendolen, Gwenllian, Bronwen, Ceridwen, Olwen. The -wen ending on those women's names is the same word in its feminine form.

The story of Gweneth
Welsh names entered general English use in two waves, the second in the early twentieth century when Welsh cultural revival and Welsh emigration made Gwyneth, Gwendolyn, Dylan and Bronwyn available outside Wales. Gwyneth was the more common spelling; Gweneth records an English ear, which hears the y as a plain e and writes it accordingly. That is a real distinction — Welsh y in this position is a distinct vowel with no English equivalent, so any English spelling of the name is already an approximation. The 1941 peak places it in the middle of that first American generation.
Meaning
Welsh "blessed, fair, white"
From Welsh gwyn, masculine, and gwen, feminine — white, fair, and by extension blessed or holy. Gwyneth is generally taken from Gwynedd, the kingdom and modern county of north-west Wales, which shares the root, or directly from gwyn with an abstract ending. The color and blessing senses are both genuine in Welsh, not a modern conflation.

Two syllables with the stress on the first and the th unvoiced, as in breath rather than in breathe. Welsh gwy is a single glide, so the name never has three syllables. The e spelling is closer to English speech than the y spelling is.

The Wyoma test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gweneth's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Wyoma climbed just as high around 1920, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Wyoma's path sketches the road Gweneth is walking now.
Gweneth sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off

- It is unmistakably Welsh, which few names outside Wales manage.
- Gwyneth is the standard spelling and will be written instead.
- The initial gw cluster is unfamiliar to many English speakers.
- The 1940s peak dates it to a particular generation.
