The Ja- respelling is American and recent, and Jacelyn's peak is 2013.

From Gauzelin to Jacelyn
The story of Jacelyn
Gauzelin came to England with the Normans in the eleventh century and became Joscelin, a common man's name in the medieval period; it also gave the surname Joslin and, through the Breton Judoc, tangled with Joyce. It faded as a given name and survived mainly as a surname until the twentieth century, when it returned as a girls' name in Britain and America. That transfer is common with surname-derived names and is worth noticing here: Jocelyn was male for eight hundred years and has been female for about eighty. The Ja- spelling belongs entirely to the American period and follows the Ja- respelling habit that also produced Jaelyn, Jaycee and Jacelynn.
Meaningscholars disagree
of the Gauts — a Germanic people
Jocelyn descends from the medieval Gautselin or Gauzelin, a Frankish name built on the tribal name of the Gauts or Geats, the people of southern Sweden who appear in Beowulf. The -lin was a diminutive ending. So the name means something like 'little Gaut' or 'one of the Gauts'. A competing derivation links it instead to a Breton saint's name, Josse or Judoc, which produced Joyce; the two names influenced each other in medieval England and their forms are genuinely entangled.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off
- Jace is a current, well-established short form.
- The first vowel is unambiguous, which Jocelyn's is not for every reader.
- The underlying name has a genuinely ancient and traceable history.
- It will be corrected to Jocelyn by most people writing it down.
- Jacelyn, Jacelynn and Jaycelyn all circulate.
- The etymology is contested between a tribe and a saint, so there is no short answer.
