Isyss
Feminine · “throne”
Isyss is Isis with both vowels rewritten, and it entered American records before the word became impossible to say neutrally. The Egyptian goddess behind it was one of the longest-worshipped figures in the ancient world, from the Nile to Roman Britain, and her name in Egyptian is a plain noun: a throne.

The story of Isyss
Isis outlasted almost every other Egyptian deity. Her worship spread out of Egypt with trade, took hold across the Greek and Roman world, and reached as far as the Rhine and the Thames; temples to her stood in Rome for centuries, and she was one of the last of the old gods to be shut down. The name reached English through classical education rather than through religion, and it turns up in American records as an occasional given name for a very long time. The respellings are recent and American: Isyss, Isys and Isiss all appear around the turn of this century, when parents were routinely swapping y for i. Then the acronym arrived, and the whole family of spellings stopped being usable in the way they had been.
Meaning
throne
The Egyptian name is written Aset or Iset and is the ordinary word for a seat or a throne — the goddess wears the hieroglyph for it on her head in the images that survive. Isis is the Greek form, and it is the Greek form that Europe inherited. The meaning is not disputed. Why a throne, and whether it points to kingship or to a role in the myths, is discussed and not settled, but the word itself is as plain as words get.

Pronouncing Isyss
EYE-sis
EYE-sis, two syllables, stress at the front — the y makes no difference to the sound. The Egyptian original was closer to AH-set, but no living tradition says it that way, and the Greek form is the one every European language received.

The Merlin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Isyss's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Merlin climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Merlin's path sketches the road Isyss is walking now.
Isyss sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The goddess behind it has one of the longest documented histories of any figure a name can point to.
- It is two syllables, easy to say, and phonetically obvious in any accent.
- The y-spelling separates the name visually from the word, which the plain spelling cannot do.
- Since the middle of the last decade the sound of this name has belonged, in most people's ears, to an armed group in the news rather than to an Egyptian goddess. That association is recent, involuntary and very strong.
- The respelling does not fix it, because the difficulty is in the sound rather than on the page.
- Families who carried this name before the news changed it have generally had to decide between explaining it constantly and setting it aside, and that is a real choice rather than a hypothetical one.
