The story of Isidora
Isis was worshipped across the Hellenistic and Roman world, well beyond Egypt, and names built on hers were ordinary in Greek-speaking Egypt. Christianity inherited the name rather than rejecting it, and two men made it respectable: Isidore of Pelusium, a fifth-century letter-writer, and Isidore of Seville, whose Etymologiae was the standard encyclopedia of the Latin Middle Ages and who is sometimes proposed as the patron saint of the internet. The feminine Isidora has been used in Spain, Greece, Serbia and Chile. Its American record is thin and early, peaking in 1906 with southern and eastern European immigration, and Isadora Duncan's dancing career, from 1900 to 1927, kept the other spelling visible.
Meaning
Gift of Isis
From Greek Isidōros, from Isis, the Egyptian goddess, and dōron, gift. The reading is settled and has never been seriously disputed. Isidora is the feminine. The survival of a pagan theophoric name in Christian use is not unusual — Dionysius, Demetrius and Apollonia did the same thing — but it is worth noticing.
