The story of Irie
Rastafarian speech developed a whole vocabulary built on the pronoun I — I-and-I for we, ital for vital food, irie for good — as a deliberate reworking of the colonial language. Irie spread through reggae from the 1970s into wider English. It entered American given-name use and appears in the registers in current use.

all right, good, at peace
From Jamaican Patois irie, an expression of wellbeing and approval. Its origin within Patois is not settled — proposals include an English 'all right' and a Rastafarian I-word formation, since Rastafari speech systematically replaces syllables with 'I'. Neither is documented.

The Yuri test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Irie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Yuri climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Yuri's path sketches the road Irie is walking now.
Irie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
