Where it comes from

The story of Yoselin

The Gauts of southern Sweden gave their name to Götaland and possibly to the Goths; the Normans carried Gautelen to England as Jocelyn, where it was masculine for centuries before turning feminine. Spanish-speaking families produced Yoselin and Joselyn, and it appears in the American registers in current use.

Meaningscholars disagree

of the Gauts

Through Jocelyn, from the Germanic Gautelen, a diminutive of Gaut — a member of the Gauts, a Scandinavian people. A second route derives it from the Latin iocus, 'joke'. The Gaut reading is the commoner and better documented. The Yo- spelling follows Spanish orthography.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Yoselin went to 95 girls in 2025, but Yoselyn and Yocelyn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 114, which makes it the 846th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,156 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 14,099 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 16,919 for Yoselin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Gaut connection ties it to a real Scandinavian people and possibly to the Goths.
  • Lin is available as a short form with real use.
  • The end stress gives it a strong rhythm against a front-stressed surname.
What to consider
  • Jocelyn is the standard English form and is stressed differently.
  • The origin is somewhat split between Germanic and Latin routes.
  • Several Spanish spellings are in circulation.
