The story of Fatoumata
Fatima was the Prophet's daughter and Ali's wife, and through her the line of descent that matters to Shia Islam runs. Islam reached West Africa across the Sahara from the eleventh century, and Mande languages reshaped her name as Fatoumata. It is among the commonest names in Mali, Guinea and Senegal, and is in current American use.

The Tamitha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Fatoumata's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tamitha climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tamitha's path sketches the road Fatoumata is walking now.
Fatoumata sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
