Yoselyn
Feminine · “Germanic Gaut”
Jocelyn was a man's name and before that a tribe. The Germanic Gauts, the people who gave their name to Gothland and probably to the Goths, produced a personal name Gautzelin, which Breton monks carried to England with a saint's relics. It arrived as a boy's name, stayed one for six hundred years, and is now almost entirely female.

The story of Yoselyn
The Gauts are one of the murkier peoples of early northern Europe. The name survives in Gotland, in Gothenburg, in the Old English Geats of Beowulf, and probably in the Goths, though whether all of those refer to the same group is disputed. What is clear is that a personal name built on the tribal name circulated in Frankish Gaul, was carried into Brittany, and reached England with the Normans. The name's move from male to female in English happened in the twentieth century, following the usual one-way pattern, and its arrival in Mexican American naming is a separate and more recent event. The Y spelling is the mark of that: Spanish has no J with the English sound, so a name borrowed from English gets a Y, and the result belongs to the same family as Yesenia, Yaritza and Yulissa.
Meaning
Germanic Gaut, a member of the Gaut tribe
From the Germanic tribal name Gaut, with a diminutive ending, giving Gautzelin and then Old French Josselin. The relics of a Breton saint of the name were brought to England after the Conquest and the name became common there for men. Yoselyn is a Spanish-influenced respelling using Y for the initial J sound, and belongs to the Mexican American Y-initial naming pattern. It peaks in 2007.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Yoselyn went to 12 girls in 2025, but Yoselin and Yocelyn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 114, which makes it the 846th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,516 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 14,099 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Yoselyn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Wylene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yoselyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Wylene climbed just as high around 1935, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Wylene's path sketches the road Yoselyn is walking now.
Yoselyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
