Irie
Masculine · “good”

Irie is a word before it is a name in Jamaica, where it means good, right, everything as it should be, a Rastafarian word that spread with reggae into English worldwide. The same spelling also turns up in American records long before that, which makes it a name with two separate beginnings that happen to look alike.

The story of Irie
Rastafari reshaped English deliberately, replacing words whose sounds felt wrong with new ones, and irie is one of the survivors of that project: an expression of wellbeing that traveled out of Kingston with reggae in the nineteen-seventies and is now understood far beyond the Caribbean. Its earlier American appearances are unconnected and much quieter, a short vowel-heavy spelling of the kind families made around names like Ira. The name in use today draws almost entirely on the Jamaican word.
Meaningscholars disagree
good, fine, at peace, in Jamaican Patois
The Jamaican Patois irie is well documented: an all-purpose word of approval and wellbeing, strongly associated with Rastafari and in general Jamaican use through the twentieth century. Whether the American given name descends from it is another matter, since the spelling appears in United States records before the word traveled abroad, where it looks more like a respelling of Ira. Both roads are real.
Pronouncing Irie
eye-REE
Two syllables with the stress at the end, as it is said in Jamaica. American speakers sometimes say EYE-ree with the weight in front, or read it as the word eerie, which is something else entirely.

The Adger test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Irie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Adger climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Adger's path sketches the road Irie is walking now.
Irie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It carries a warm, well-understood meaning wherever Caribbean English is spoken.
- Four letters and two syllables: easy to write, easy to call.
- It is short and vowel-led, unusual without being difficult.
- In American English it sits close to eerie, and that reading will come up.
- The stress is not obvious from the spelling, so the name gets said two ways.
- The word belongs to a specific tradition, and some people will read the name as a claim on it.
