The story of Idalia
Idalion was a Cypriot city-state with a sanctuary of Aphrodite, and Virgil and Ovid both call her Idalia. The Idalion Tablet, a bronze inscription from the site, was crucial to deciphering the Cypriot syllabary. Idalia is used in Spanish and Italian naming and appears in American records in current use.

of Idalion
From the Greek Idalia, an epithet of Aphrodite from her sanctuary at Idalion in Cyprus; the town's own name is not recovered. A separate Germanic route derives it from id, 'work' or 'labor'. Both are attributed and the Cypriot route is the commoner.

The trade-off
- That an inscription from the town helped decipher a lost script is a first-rate fact.
- Ida and Lia are two short forms, both with real records.
- Virgil and Ovid both use the epithet, which is real classical weight.
- The town's own name is not recovered.
- The origin is split between Greek and Germanic routes.
- English and Spanish pronounce it quite differently.
