The story of Iana
The Ioannes names spread through Christian Europe faster and further than any other, and each language reshaped the front of the word according to its own sound system. Slavic languages produced Ivan and its feminine Yana; Romanian, which is a Romance language written with Latin letters but heavily influenced by its Slavic neighbors, produced Ioan and Iana. Bulgarian and Moldovan use the same form. The spelling with an initial I rather than a Y or a J is what distinguishes it, and it survives transliteration into English intact. American use is small and rising, following recent migration from Romania, Moldova and the wider region.
