The story of Heron
Hero of Alexandria, working in the first century, described the aeolipile — a sphere spun by escaping steam, the first recorded steam engine — along with a vending machine, a windwheel and a good deal of practical geometry; Heron's formula for the area of a triangle is named for him. The Greek name passed into Spanish as Herón and is used in Mexico. The English bird word is a separate thing entirely, and the American record of the name, peaking in 1950, is thin enough that both roads are plausible for different bearers.

The bird; or hero, if Greek
The English word heron comes through Old French from a Germanic root imitating the bird's cry. Separately, Greek Hērōn is a name formed on hērōs, a hero, borne by Hero of Alexandria; Spanish Herón descends from that. The two are unrelated and the English spelling serves both, so the reading depends entirely on which a family had in mind.

The Eris test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Heron's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eris climbed just as high around 1923, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eris's path sketches the road Heron is walking now.
Heron sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
