Heloise
Feminine · “healthy and wide”
Heloise is one of the very few names carried into modern use by a woman's own writing. The letters between Heloise d'Argenteuil and Peter Abelard, written in the twelfth century, are read today as much for her arguments as for the story around them, and hers is the name that survived.

The story of Heloise
Heloise was a scholar in Paris in the 1110s, later abbess of the Paraclete, and her correspondence with Abelard has been continuously copied, translated and argued over since the thirteenth century; Pope's poem of 1717 gave it a second life in English. That is why the name is French in form but recognized across Europe. It entered American use modestly, with its best year on record in 1913. A second and quite different American association arrived in 1959, when a Texas newspaper columnist writing as Heloise began publishing household advice; for a generation of American readers the name meant the column rather than the abbess, which is an unusually large distance for one name to cover.
Meaningscholars disagree
healthy and wide, from Germanic elements
The most-supported derivation is from Germanic Helewidis, combining heil, healthy, hale or whole, with wid, wide. A competing line connects the name to the Hlodowig family, which gives Louis, Ludwig and the feminine Louise, and some medieval Latin sources treat Heloissa and Aloisia as interchangeable. Both explanations are defensible and neither is settled.

The trade-off
- Attached to a woman known for her own writing rather than for someone else's story about her.
- Recognized across France, Brazil, Portugal and the English-speaking world.
- The spelling with h distinguishes it clearly from the now much more common Eloise.
- Eloise is far more common in the United States and will be written instead.
- Three pronunciations compete, and the silent h is not obvious to English readers.
- Older Americans may recall the household-advice column before anything else.
