Harini
Feminine · “doe”
Sanskrit poetry names its meters after things. There is a meter called Mandakranta, the slow-approaching one, and one called Shikharini, the crested one, and one called Harini, the doe. A poet choosing a meter was choosing a gait as much as a rhythm.

The story of Harini
Hari is one of those Sanskrit color words that does not map onto English at all: it covers tawny, pale yellow, greenish and the color of a horse, and it is used of the sun, of gold and of grass. A deer is a harina because of its coat. Vishnu is Hari for reasons the tradition explains differently in different places. And classical Sanskrit prosody, which is unusually precise about syllable weight, gave its meters names drawn from the same everyday world — a river, a garland, a crested bird, a doe — so that the technical vocabulary of poetry is made of ordinary things. Harini is one of those, a meter of seventeen syllables to the line.
Meaning
doe, female deer
Sanskrit harini is the feminine of harina, a deer, which is built on hari, a color word covering tawny, yellow and green — the deer is named for its coat. Hari is also one of the names of Vishnu, so the word sits in two quite different registers at once.

The Nadege test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Harini's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nadege climbed just as high around 1986, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nadege's path sketches the road Harini is walking now.
Harini sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Sanskrit meaning naming a real animal rather than an abstraction.
- Three open syllables and no consonant cluster anywhere.
- It is a current, ordinary name in South India rather than a revival.
- Harini and Haarini are both transliterated, so the spelling will occasionally be queried.
- Outside Indian families the reference will need explaining, which some people enjoy.
- The h is fully pronounced and English speakers sometimes swallow it.
