Where it comes from

The story of Kattie

Catherine of Alexandria is one of the most painted saints in Europe and one of the least documented. The legend has her arguing fifty philosophers into conversion, refusing an emperor, and surviving the wheel before being beheaded; she was among the most popular saints of the Middle Ages, with a place in the Fourteen Holy Helpers and a voice among those Joan of Arc reported hearing. In 1969 the Vatican removed her feast from the universal calendar on the grounds that nothing about her could be established, and restored it as optional in 2002. The wheel outlived the argument: a Catherine wheel is still a firework, and a rose window in that pattern still takes her name.

Not established

Catherine comes from Greek Aikaterine, which has no known origin. The meaning usually printed, pure, was attached in late antiquity by association with katharos and is a folk etymology rather than a source; the th in Katharine was added to make the connection visible. Kattie is a pet form with a doubled consonant and no separate meaning.

Kattie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1926, with 86 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kattie went to 7 girls in 2025, but Katie and Catie are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 460, which makes it the 544th most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,388 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,494 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Kattie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One of the largest name families in Europe stands behind it, in every language.
  • Catherine is available as a formal version with a fifteen-hundred-year record.
  • Two syllables that everyone can say and spell.
What to consider
  • Katie is far commoner and this spelling will be corrected toward it.
  • It is strongly represented among the oldest generations and reads clearly as of that time.
  • The meaning usually given for the name behind it was attached rather than inherited.
