Paris is named after a tribe. The Parisii were a Gaulish people living on an island in the Seine when the Romans arrived, the Romans called their town Lutetia, and the tribe's name outlasted the Roman one. The Trojan prince of the same name has nothing to do with any of it.

Where it comes from

The story of Parris

Lutetia Parisiorum was the Roman name — Lutetia of the Parisii — and by the fourth century people had dropped the first half and were calling it simply Parisius. That is how a city ends up carrying the name of the people who were there before the empire arrived. The surname Parris means someone from Paris, and it went to England and then to New England, where the most consequential American bearer was Samuel Parris, the minister of Salem Village in whose household the accusations of 1692 began. There is also Parris Island in South Carolina, where the Marine Corps has trained recruits since 1915, which is where most Americans have met the spelling.

Meaning

of the Parisii

The city is named for the Gaulish tribe whose name the Romans recorded as Parisii; the tribe's own name has no agreed meaning. The Trojan Paris in the Iliad is an entirely separate Greek name of unknown origin, and the resemblance is a coincidence.

Parris sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2005, with 66 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Parris went to 7 girls in 2025, but Paris and Parys are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 515, which makes it the 512th most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,420 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,121 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Parris itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented origin in a named people the Romans wrote about.
  • It genuinely serves either child, and the records show both.
  • Two syllables that everyone can already say and nearly spell.
What to consider
  • It is one of the best-known cities in the world and that association is fixed.
  • Paris with one r is far commoner as a given name, so the spelling will be given.
  • It leans to girls without settling, so forms will guess and will sometimes be wrong.
