The story of Haidyn
England had several settlements named Hayden and Heydon, and families took their names from them in the usual way. The surname reached America early and became a given name in the late twentieth century, at which point it split in two directions at once: it was given to girls and to boys, and its spelling multiplied into Hayden, Haiden, Haden, Haydn and Haidyn. This spelling is among the more recent and is used chiefly for girls.

The Nydia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Haidyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nydia climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nydia's path sketches the road Haidyn is walking now.

The trade-off
- A documented English place-name meaning behind a very familiar current sound.
- The sound is understood at once by any English speaker.
- It is used for girls and boys, which makes it usable before a birth.
- Hayden is overwhelmingly the standard spelling, and this one will be rewritten on nearly every form.
- The name is very widely used in the sound if not the spelling, so a classroom may hold more than one.
- Being given to both sexes means paperwork will guess, and sometimes guess wrong.
