The story of Lucina
Roman women in labor called on Juno Lucina, and Latin poets used the title as a shorthand for birth itself. The word survived the empire in literary Latin and reappeared as a given name in Italy and Spain, and separately in English-speaking countries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when classical names were fashionable. American records show it in steady, quiet use through the nineteenth century, alongside Lucinda, Lucia and Lucretia.

The trade-off
- A settled Latin meaning tied to one specific and rather moving idea.
- Lucy sits inside it as a plain, universally understood short form.
- Documented in Latin literature and in English records alike, so it is neither new nor obscure.
- Lucinda and Lucia are both better known and will be written for her by mistake.
- The middle vowel is said two ways in English and neither has won.
- The birth association is lovely at the time and rather specific to carry for eighty years.
