French made Joseph feminine as Josèphe and then Joséphine, and the nineteenth century took Joséphine everywhere in Europe. English-speaking families clipped it to Josie almost immediately, and by the late nineteenth century Josie was being registered on its own in American records. The z spelling is recent and belongs with Mazie, Roze and Izzy — a small fashion for replacing a soft s with the letter that actually makes that sound.
